The training has to be like very much on the fly and on the chop directly. And from the first days this person has to be involved in the daily operations and practically absorb the staff themself. This is the most important thing that people have to be hungry to learn by himself and they have to ask the right questions because this is how you can get help.

There is usually no hand holding that somebody sits with you every day for two hours and explains the stuff. But when you request it, everybody will make time to help you. So, the companies have to encourage people to ask questions and ask for help. What is more, the companies should provide new affiliate managers with a basic education. This is how people can start in the industry and get fast on track.

What are the key strategies for success in the first three months for a new affiliate manager?

How to be a good affiliate manager? It’s important to understand how this industry works. You have to learn your terms, speak with all the departments in the company to examine all the aspects of the project. It’s good if the company already has a SWOT analysis or VIKI that they can go through and ask the right questions. And the rest of the training should be done as much as possible hands on.

I recommend joining as many chats as possible, and in these chats be like an observer. And after that you can go back to the somebody in the company and ask the things or figure it out by yourself.

What are the biggest challenges affiliate managers face today and what we can expect in the near future?

There are a lot of challenges nowadays for affiliate marketing managers.

One of them is that verticals start to compete more with each other on the same traffic sources. The most obvious ones are Dating 18+, iGaming, Nutra verticals that are highly approached to make money. For example, Dating campaigns go back to Facebook. So, if you are an affiliate manager working with Facebook traffic, pay your attention to this niche.

Many good affiliate managers left the companies to make their own programs or networks which wasn’t possible 10-12 years ago. There weren’t so many SAAS solutions earlier that take over everything you need to run a network. Now, there are so many options on the market that are affordable and easy to run even if you have not a deep technical understanding. This is a problem for companies, because when their employee quits, they get another competitor.

Another problem for affiliate managers is that it shifted a lot from individual affiliates to teams of affiliates. So, when you have teams of affiliates, and these guys are professionals with hundreds of people, it’s harder to build a personal relationship with these people. But personal connection is so important in this industry.

Networking, conferences, and meetups as key factors in the affiliate world

To build my personal brand it took me nearly 15 years and I made a rondout calculation that it cost me and the companies that were sending me to the conference is most probably something like $200,000. So, that is not something that you can do overnight.

Start by building your personal brand through becoming a go-to expert in a specific field, which can be quite diverse within the realm of affiliate management. For instance, if you specialize in providing white-label solutions, make sure to engage with your partners, and the wider market. It’s important that people see you as the person to turn to for this kind of expertise. This is the first step in carving out your niche.

There are so many podcasts out there about the online marketing industry, you can always find an opportunity to speak somewhere. And what I can recommend is, if you are doing it for the first time, do it in the language that you speak by mother. When you are speaking in a foreign language and this language is far from your native, you will have an additional challenge besides being nervous.

Then, of course, you can use the people that you work with as like a multiplicator. When you do some features with them together, usually everybody is sharing so that another audience is seeing your stuff as well. That is also something that is helping, you don’t have to do it alone.

Coming back to the conferences, there are a lot of events where I practically go without any expectations. I go there just for networking. So, I recommend you really to visit one time per year a conference that has close to nothing to do with your vertical to see a different perspective.

What are time management strategies that help affiliate managers to be effective?

There are 5 strategies that help me not to be overwhelmed:

1. I eliminate anything that distracts me from work. I used to eat lunch while watching YouTube, but I stopped. I realized that even after finishing my food, I still wanted to finish watching the video;

2. When I wake up early in the morning, I should just get out of bed. Previously, I would spend two hours rolling around in bed doing nothing, thinking, “Oh, it’s only 6:00, I can sleep for another two to three hours.” Now, I simply get up and gain an extra two hours in my day;

3. I’ve noticed that I had repetitive tasks that I could delegate to someone else. That’s when I decided to hire additional help. This way, tasks can be done more efficiently;

4. I also started using a virtual assistant. Affiliate managers often spend too much time on repetitive tasks like creating links and ensuring details are up to date. These tasks can easily be outsourced to a virtual assistant;

5. I keep a whiteboard with all my important tasks listed. Although it doesn’t detail how to do each task, seeing these reminders every time motivates me to tackle them. I refresh this board weekly with new tasks. Having it physically next to me, rather than in a task management software, significantly boosts productivity.

Predictions for major trends in affiliate marketing for 2025, including recruitment trends

I notice a significant difference in the way people approach recruitment.

Previously, recruitment services were a one-stop solution for everyone. However, with big companies establishing their own HR departments, they are less inclined to collaborate with external recruiters. Talent scouts within these companies have more autonomy but may lack the budget, motivation, or willingness to engage external assistance when they believe they can handle the process internally.

Some companies lacking an HR department opt not to interview affiliate managers or media buyers themselves. Instead, they request us to provide the top 2-3 pre-selected candidates for the final decision.

Furthermore, companies now assign tasks for candidates to complete before interviews — a practice that is becoming increasingly common.

I anticipate that AI will play a more significant role in areas that are not immediately apparent. For instance, a portion of the affiliate management role may become automated in the future.

I also observe a trend of the East and West coming together more closely. Many Western companies are now hiring individuals from the CIS region.

RichAds advertising network has launched a breakthrough advertising format — native ads in Telegram mini apps. This is the first time when telegram ads can be launched in the advertising network not in telegram ads agency!

We asked Evgeny Kuznetsov, Chief Product Officer at RichAds ad holding, to tell us more about the new ad format of telegram ads, how much they cost, and how to set them up.

Telegram is an actively developing messenger with millions of users worldwide. The service allowed advertising within its channels in 2021, but only through certified agencies. Many affiliate marketers who were interested in Telegram ads were discouraged by this. While they could run ads on Telegram’s channels, it was difficult to reach them since only Telegram ad agencies could do so.

RichAds advertising network is the first to allow advertisers to run telegram ads in the advertising network. At RichAds advertisers can buy a new advertising format — native advertising in Telegram mini apps. In the article, let’s dive deeper into this new ad format and how to use RichAds to launch it.

About the idea of launching a new type of ads in Telegram

1. Can you tell us how you came up with the idea of launching a new advertising format on Telegram?

The idea itself lies on the surface: Telegram is a potentially attractive source of traffic. The number of users will soon reach one billion. As it stands, Telegram’s advertising isn’t very convenient for affiliates. There are a lot of restrictions, and ads launch needs to be handled through agencies.

We began considering ways of making running ads on Telegram easier, and explored options for doing so. Hamster Kombat’s rapid rise led us to focus on mini-apps, find owners of large ones, and test advertising there. There were a lot of users in mini applications, and we liked their high response to a new type of advertising. What is more important: we liked the results we got.

Native advertising in Telegram mini apps is an innovative channel with a huge traffic base, which nobody uses — that’s what we bet on. Besides, we don’t have any competitors yet, but I think they will appear soon.

2. Will Telegram react normally if they find out about these ways of monetizing their traffic? What do you think about it?

I think they will be fine with that. Telegram is a free-minded platform. Furthermore, we do not compete with their ads (their ads appear in channels, ours in mini-apps). By doing this, we also help mini app creators monetize their applications and make money. Thus, they will be able to launch new products that will help grow Telegram’s Mini App Store. So what’s the problem?

3. How will your Telegram ads differ from those already running on Telegram?

Telegram’s classic ads appear inside channels. All of you know what they look like. We display ads in Telegram mini apps. This isn’t in the channels, it’s just inside the mini app.

As I’ve already mentioned, we do not compete with official Telegram ads. Our goal is not to capture the attention of regular Telegram users but to capture the attention of mini-app users. Additionally, we have a different traffic source (mini-apps in our case), a different appearance of ads, and a different cost (much more attractive than advertising in Telegram channels). We primarily collect traffic from popular clickers.

We have more opportunities because we are an advertising network. For example, we can offer affiliate marketers interesting targeting options. The best part: RichAds provides the option of launching advertising campaigns self-serve.

4. How this advertising format looks like? Is it noted as an advertisement?

Telegram mini apps ads for now look very similar to push notifications. It consists of an icon and a text block. Ads will pop up above the mini app’s main content. The advertising will not be marked.

RichAds is planning to modify the format in the near future. First of all, ads will be better adapted to app content. Next, we are planning to make a few variants of banners. Also, we’re considering rewarded formats, videos, and other forms.

5. How many people can you reach? What kind of mini-apps are we talking about?

Telegram mini apps may generate a lot of traffic. There are many apps with over 10 million users. Telegram traffic in RichAds already exceeds 70+ million users worldwide and will continue to grow.

What about mini-apps? These are apps with games based on bots. Unfortunately, we are unable to disclose which bots we are integrated with. I can just mention that among them are the largest Telegram gaming platforms, clicker applications for earning coins, and entertainment applications.

6. Which countries have the most traffic to your Telegram ads? What are the best countries to test your Telegram ads in?

RichAds has telegram traffic in many countries. Mostly, of course, these are countries where Telegram is popular. In our traffic, we see a slight skew towards CIS countries, Asia (especially India), Africa (for example, we have a lot of traffic from Nigeria), and Europe. 7. How do you sell ads for Telegram mini apps? How much do Telegram ads cost? What factors determine the cost?

The CPC model was chosen for selling Telegram ads at RichAds. When other variants of the Telegram ads format will be added to the platform we’ll decide which payment model to choose (we are thinking about CPM as well). First-price auction is our usual selling method.

The price of Telegram ads at RichAds depends on the country and may depend on the vertical. Right now, prices start at $0.02. Come test the format while the prices are at their lowest; later on, we’ll segment them more based on their verticals.

When you choose the geo, the platform will show you the recommended CPC for it and you can consult with the manager about pricing.

8. An advertiser wishes to run a test with you for the first time. Could you tell me what the minimum deposit and test budget should be?

All new clients at RichAds are required to deposit $150, regardless of the ad format they choose. With a $500 deposit, RichAds will assign you a personal account manager. This person will help you with the launch and optimization.

Any marketer can test telegram ads with recommended budget of at least $30 per day for tests, but more is better.

We also offer free creatives to all new clients who test out the Telegram ads. Contact your managers or the support team for them.

10. Which verticals are worth launching?

In fact, you can test everything: the format is untapped, CTR is high, and different offers show great results. First of all, you can try e-commerce, fintech, SaaS, edtech, apps, and others.

I think many advertisers for Gambling and Betting will come to try this format. This makes sense: many mini-apps have a suitable audience for them based on behavioral factors.

There is one important point to note: our moderation is quite loyal, but grey and black offers will not be accepted.

How to run ads on Telegram mini apps?

11. Are there any tools to track the results of ads in Telegram? Will trackers support this format?

Yes, all trackers support Telegram ads without problems. There are 11 trackers integrated with RichAds now, including the most popular RedTrack, Voluum, Binom, Bemob, Keitaro, and others. We are already working on adding templates for a new ad channel to them.

Until it is not available, you can use the push channel in the tracker. All data will be transmitted correctly.

I highly recommend using a tracker and setting up postback. Your results will be better that way. First of all, we have many cool features for optimization. Some of them will work for Telegram ads. If you set up postback, our managers can actively help you optimize your campaigns. 

12. Can you tell me how to set up ads in Telegram on your platform? How about creatives?

A creative is the first thing you need, preferably several different ones. For one ad campaign, we recommend starting with 5 creatives. We see a high CTR in the ads in mini apps. The format is new and not burned out, so it’s understandable. However, you should still try different creatives to see what works best.

I’ve already mentioned that the creative we have so far looks like a push notification. It requires a small 128*128 icon and 2 lines of text (30 and 60 characters each). As of now, you can only use static images as icons, but we are working on adding more options.

You can only run one URL in one campaign. It is not visible on the creative itself, but the whole area is clickable.

Also, our moderation is round-the-clock and as fast as possible, taking no longer than 5 minutes at any time.

13. Is there any targeting available for the Telegram ad? Is there room to spread it out?

RichAds now has targeting options:

  • By country (one country for one ad campaign),
  • Operating system,
  • Browser language (to ensure you don’t show your ads to users with another language),
  • Clicks cap,
  • Telegram Premium subscribers,
  • Schedule.

It is highly recommended to set up a limit on the number of clicks from a user. This will prevent you from paying for empty clicks. Even if a user clicks 12 times, he will only buy once. Limit each user to 5 clicks per day or week.

A new targeting by type of user’s account is now available: affiliates can reach Premium/non-premium accounts. It allows to test a more solvent audience. This targeting cuts traffic volumes, so if you want to test it, create a separate ad campaign.

Mobiles and computers weren’t targeted on purpose, as we don’t want marketers to limit their traffic in this way. Adding them will depend on marketers’ needs.

In the near future we plan to release targeting by ads display limits. This option will limit how many Telegram ads marketers want to show to one person per day. It will be possible for affiliates to set it between 1 and 4 per day or unlimited. We recommend to limit the number of displays to 1-2 per day.

Our plans include some very interesting targeting that we do not have on any other traffic format yet. Watch this space for more information.

A marketer can avoid a disastrous ad campaign launch by following these tips:
